Generic Microwave Disclaimer: Microwave ovens use very high voltage while operating and this voltage may still be present even when the oven is not connected to an outlet. Do not operate a microwave oven with the covers removed, and never use your hands or tools inside the unit while it is plugged in. Before any work is attempted, the high voltage capacitor must be discharged using an insulated screwdriver or set of pliers. Both terminals should be shorted together, and then to the chassis to ensure any charge has been removed. Capacitors can hold a charge for quite some time and do not require the unit to be plugged in to shock you. A functioning capacitor may not produce a visible spark when discharged, but it is better to be safe than possibly dead. There is no fun in getting shocked.

Here is a short video showing a capacitor being discharge using a set of needle nosed pliers with insulated handles. Enjoy the video and be safe when working on appliances.
