Model #MDB9601AWWicon, this tall tub dishwasher had been working properly, but the next time the customer went to use it, nothing worked. Normally, the indicator lights would be illuminated along with the numeric display on the front panel, but not anymore. Opening the door or touching any of the buttons had no affect and the customer even checked the circuit breaker to ensure it was turned on. The dishes were piling up, it was time to have this dishwasher serviced.

Dishwashers are rather simple devices, in that they use a mechanical timer or electronic control board to turn various components on and off. These components include such things as water valves, heating elements, and pump motors. The entire wash process is dependant on each of these components operating in a set order and for a predetermined length of time. Mechanical timers follow a specific set of instructions, while an electronic control has the ability to take inputs from sensors and to modify the programing set for each of the cycles.

Because of the simple design of dishwashers, when one appears to be dead, the troubleshooting process is usually as simple as verifying voltage to the control or timer. In the case of this dishwasher, I checked for voltage between the L1 terminal and a neutral line on an adjacent connector. My multimeter read 118 volts AC so with voltage entering the board, but none of the lights illuminating, the control board must have suffered from a catastrophic failure.

A new control boardicon was installed into the door assembly being careful not to damage the ribbon cables to each of the touch pads. With the power turned back on, the lights appeared immediately and a test wash verified everything was working just like before.
